3 Laundry Tips for Your Kid's Private School Uniforms

by Cory Diaz

One of the many advantages of sending your children to a private school is not having to worry about traipsing the malls for hours, school clothes shopping for your child. And if you have more than one kid, it's can be even more exhausting. Gone are arguments over what's appropriate attire or a good use of money, too. School uniforms are also great when there are multiple children in the family as many times they can be handed down to the younger children. However, this requires making sure you are taking care of them properly. Here's what you need to know to get the most life out of your kid's school uniforms.

Wash in Cold Water

Skip the hot water and wash in cold water instead. Cold water helps prevent shrinkage, but it also slows down colors from running or fading. Cold water will also save money and energy. Wash on the delicate or gentle cycle so there is minimum agitation. If the clothes are particularly dirty, it is better to add a soak cycle to the washing time rather than turning to the heavy cycle, which can be hard on clothing.

If you don't have a soak option, simply open the washing machine door on top-loaders once the drum has filled; this will serve the same purpose. Use a quality detergent that has a color-fade protection additive. Keep bleach to a minimum, usually only when white dress shirts actually need bleaching. Be sure to turn jumpers and sweaters inside out to reduce pilling.

Use Tumble Dry

While you could hang white dress shirts on the line as they won't be adversely affected by the sun, it is best to place in the dryer and dry on low or delicate. Use a cool down setting if your dryer has one. This will reduce wrinkles and cut down on ironing time. You can also remove from the dryer before the clothing is completely dry and shake any wrinkles out before immediately hanging to finish drying.

Have Your Kids Wear Play Clothes

You can dramatically cut down on both uniform wear and tear and laundry by having your children immediately change into play clothes upon arriving home. Make sure they hang their uniforms up so they are wrinkle-free and look good enough for another day. You can also use a fabric freshener spray if the uniform still looks clean but doesn't smell the freshest.

Additionally, consider spraying outerwear, blazers, and ties with a fabric protector to help them stay clean longer and reduce dry cleaning expenses. Even if you only have one child in a uniform and they don't need to be handed down, by taking care of their clothing, you can make money towards their new ones by selling them at school uniform events.

About Me

Developing Your Career

When was the last time you were really happy at work? About a year ago, I started asking myself this question, and it occurred to me that I really needed to go back to school. I started spending a lot of time thinking carefully about what the future held for me, and it was really eye-opening. Within a few short months, I was enrolled at another college and enjoying my time learning. I wanted to make a blog for adults that head back to school, because it is a great way to make your life better. Check out this blog for finding the right school for you.
